AlburyCBD: Nicole, tell us a little about yourself. What’s something people might not know?

Nicole: I’m Nicole, and I’ve been running my small business since 2018. I started out exclusively online but eventually embraced the local market scene, becoming a stall holder over the past five years. Before launching Soulful & Fresh, I spent 12 years in retail, where I honed my skills as a store manager for a global company.

AlburyCBD: Tell us about Soulful & Fresh. What’s your why?

Nicole: Soulful & Fresh was born out of my journey to find natural DIY cleaners. After purchasing some from a friend, I began experimenting with my own formulations. I quickly realised that many personal care products are filled with SLS and parabens, which I can’t use. This led me to research and develop products that are free from these ingredients. A standout ingredient in my creations is Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA), derived from vegetable sources and gentle on the skin, as it is a mild anionic surfactant. You’ll find it in our Bath Bombs, Bubble Bath Dust, and Milk and Oat Bath Dust.

I’m always looking for more environmentally friendly ways to use everyday products. Before I developed our Scent Boosters, I stopped using fabric softener. Now, I use our Scent Boosters in every wash, adding them to my laundry powder, and I also find them great to use in my vacuum cleaner when I’m cleaning.

AlburyCBD: What do you love about running your role at Soulful & Fresh?

Nicole: What I love most is the ability to create products that my family and I use daily. Everything is tried and tested in my own home. For items I don’t personally create, like our bath bombs and shower steamers, I ensure I support fellow small businesses.

One of my biggest motivations for opening a storefront was my son. He has special needs, and I wanted him to have the opportunity to learn about the workplace in a nurturing environment. He has a passion for woodworking, and this shop gives him a space to grow, showcase his work, and learn valuable social skills.

AlburyCBD: What’s a challenge you’ve had to overcome in business?

Nicole: My greatest challenge has been believing in myself and having faith in my products. With my background in retail, I’m familiar with the ups and downs of business. Transitioning to a personal venture has taught me the importance of authenticity. I want to focus on people and relationships rather than just targets and numbers, as many larger companies do.

AlburyCBD: What do you enjoy about being in the Albury CBD?

Nicole: I appreciate the diversity and variety of shops in the CBD. This creates a generous community where local businesses can support each other.
