Meet the Business Owner: Steph & Shan Baker from The Flower Girl

AlburyCBD: Tell us a little about yourself – what’s something about you people might not know.

Steph & Shan: We are two sisters who grew up across the border, and we are 18 months apart in age. We are both very similar but yet so different, which is an added bonus when running our business together because we complement each other nicely. We spend most days together, so luckily, we enjoy each other’s company!

AlburyCBD: Tell us about The Flower Girl. What’s your why, and what do you love about running your business?

Steph & Shan: We are a colourful and fun florist studio located on Dean Street where we create and deliver unique flower arrangements and wedding florals plus plants, sweet treats and gifts for the Albury/Wodonga region.

We love that we get to work among the flowers every day and that we are able to help people celebrate in times of joy and sadness.

We are so proud that we have created a new life working for ourselves and know that what we put in, we get out – in business and in life. Growing up, we had both always envisioned being our own boss one day… We’ve got Dad to thank for that one!

AlburyCBD: What’s a challenge you’ve had to overcome in business?

Steph & Shan: We think that our challenge was actually taking the leap from leaving our corporate jobs behind and purchasing The Flower Girl. It was a big decision to make for both of us, and we put a lot of thought into it before we fully committed to the idea.

We agreed that we were both at a stage in our lives where we knew that we wanted and deserved ‘more’ – more purpose, more freedom and most importantly, more happiness! So, we knuckled down for the challenge, fast forward two years to now and here we are!

AlburyCBD: What would you be doing if you weren’t running The Flower Girl?

Steph & Shan:  If we weren’t running The Flower Girl, we may have taken the opportunity to try something else new – whether it be living and working in a new state for one of us or living further out of town on some acreage for the other!

AlburyCBD: What do you love about being in the Albury CBD?

Steph & Shan: We absolutely LOVE being right in the heart of Albury and within walking distance to everything that we need as a business. Our location is also super convenient, being very central, as instead of needing to drive everywhere, it allows us to walk any flowers that need to be delivered around the Albury CBD. We find our locations also very convenient for our customers and street traffic. We have so many other amazing local businesses around us on Dean Street and we have a nice community around us!
